I used to think being stuck at a desk all day was the price of adulthood. Don’t get me wrong, I haven’t found a magic gate to escape work! I just got a standing desk, and now I can’t imagine life without it.
Here’s how my body and mind changed after using a Desktronic height-adjustable desk for 3 months.
This was the first thing I noticed, and it kicked in fast. When I sat all day, I would get very tired around 2 pm and almost couldn’t finish my emails without losing focus. Now my energy stays steady. I still feel sleepy sometimes, but it doesn’t ruin the whole day.
The ongoing tightness has finally eased. Even after standing for just an hour, my back and shoulders feel less painful than before. Standing lets me move around, lean on the desk, change my weight, and stretch my neck or other muscles. Of course, I still use my sit-stand desk with a comfy ergonomic chair because, honestly, people don’t stand all day, and no one needs to.
I only noticed how poor my posture was once it began to get better. Changing between sitting and standing makes me much more aware of how I hold myself during the day. I move my weight from one leg to the other, change my position, and keep moving. That’s how our bodies are meant to work.
Some days, standing feels too much, but I still adjust my stand up desk until my shoulders and elbows feel comfortable. Even small changes like this help a lot.
Here’s the fun discovery: when I swap sitting to standing during the day, I actually burn more calories. I put this to the test with a mini experiment: my smartwatch showed that 1 hour of sitting at my computer burned 84 calories, but standing and adding a few micro-movements bumped that up to 105 calories.
The difference isn't very large but try adding it up over several months! Keep in mind that all of this was measured from my home office. If you are thinking about switching, it's a good idea to look over the main features to check before buying a standing desk.
I used to have good and bad days with my productivity. Some mornings were great, but in the afternoon, time felt like it had stopped. Now, I feel steadier and can focus longer, and the after-lunch slowdowns happen less often. Also, taking regular breaks to move around also helps me work more attentively and with more focus.
Changing between sitting and standing helps me focus much better than staying in one position all day. If you want to try this, begin by making sure your desk is at the right height. That small change can make a big difference.
You could start by switching from standing to sitting every 30 minutes or setting an alarm on your phone to move around now and then. These are just suggestions, so pick what suits you best. Even small changes like these can help you feel better.
